Atlantic City Salt Water Taffy
Fralinger’s Atlantic City
The most famous name in salt water taffy
While the origins of salt water taffy remain a mystery, one thing is for certain: No one did more to promote this popular Atlantic City confection than Joseph Fralinger. The one-time glassblower and fish merchant took over a taffy stand on the Atlantic City Boardwalk in 1884, perfecting his own recipe for salt water taffy the following year.
As Fralinger’s grew his business – it counted 25 flavors (the most in Atlantic City) and 6 locations – he wanted to find a way for visitors to bring the popular confection home with them. So, he created the first Atlantic City souvenir: Salt water taffy packed into 1-pound oyster boxes. More than 125 years later, salt water taffy is still Atlantic City’s most popular souvenir and a household name across America.
